Just a few weeks shy of it's 150th birthday the Rocky Mountain News issued it's last edition on Friday. The newspaper is shutting down because Scripps could not find a buyer for the money losing venture. Pictured above, The UpTake's Colorado Director Corrine McDermid with a copy of the final issue.
The Rocky Mountain News is just the latest victim of a crumbling advertising/subscription model for newspapers. Both advertisers and readers have gone online, leaving the paper with declining revenues from both but still the same overhead costs. The somewhat younger Denver Post which is also owned by Scripps remains in business. A few of the Rocky Mountain News employees will be absorbed into the Denver Post, but the vast majority of them are now unemployed.
